What is the most important point you want to make?

Some of the games we played as kids can be great family fun and get the children into exercise without them even knowing they’re doing something healthy

Question. 1

Paige: I see these kids playing with stuff we used to play with when we were young. This is the kind of exercise kids don’t seem to get anymore.

Yvonne: Absolutely, when I was little I was always playing hopscotch or something. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I started to put on pounds and as I look back on it, it was because our family got a computer and I stopped exercising.

Question 2.

Paige: The kids look like they’re having a lot of fun and they don’t even know how many calories they’re burning. We have a graphic…I’ll just list a few. Look at the number of calories a child could burn with a pogo stick or a jump rope. That’s amazing.

Yvonne: It is amazing and the best part is, parents can do this too. In fact, it give you a chance to show your kids how to hula hoop or play hopscotch and you become a kid again yourself.

Question 3

Paige: Childhood obesity rates just keep climbing. The latest numbers suggest that one in three American children are now overweight or obese. That’s really high

Yvonne: And it’s not just bad for your child’s health with higher cholesterol and diabetes, it’s really bad for their ego. I remember going from being one of the pretty girls that all the boys followed around, to being overweight and no longer popular. It was really hard on my self-esteem. I was just 13 years old. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I managed to take the weight off and keep it off.

Question 4.

Paige: Your company is Slimming World. They’ve been a household name for 40 years in the UK and now they’re here in North Texas. How is your program on childhood obesity different?

Yvonne: We don’t believe in depriving kids of food. We say eat all the healthy food like fruit and pasta and potatoes and you want and you won’t have room for the Twinkies. But having the occasional snack food is okay. That’s what being a kid is all about. And then making exercise a family affair is really key. If mom and dad is eating healthy and you’re all going out for a bike ride together, it become a lifestyle. We have families coming to our groups now. It’s not a childhood obesity problem. It’s a family problem and as a family you can all get healthy together.

Question 5.

Paige: How about your kids? What kind of exercise to they get and what are you feeding them?

Yvonne: Our kids are normal kids. We kick the soccer ball around together or go for a walk and when it comes to eating, they’re never hungry. My 6-year old Thomas actually chooses fruit instead of fries in his Happy Meal. He actually prefers it.

Question 6.

Paige: How can people get more information?

Yvonne: We have groups across North Texas now and kids get in free. Just go to www.slimmingworldusa.com to find the closest group.

Final Thought to end segment with:

Fitness can be fun. It’s not about making your child do jumping jacks and push ups. Sometimes some “old school” games like hopscotch is all it takes to get the family fit together
