Disney 101

It’s every kid’s fantasy – to see Mickey and Minnie and the rest of the gang in person at Disney World. But for first time Disney travelers, planning a trip to Magic Kingdom can leave many parents feeling overwhelmed, confused, and, let’s face it, a little Goofy.

I have just returned from Cinderella’s Castle to offer tips on ways to make your Disney trip Magical rather than Maddening.

  1. Timing is Every Thing!
The time of year that you go to Disney can make or break a trip. Going during their “Value Season” means a lot less money, a lot less heat, and a lot less crowds.

The best times of the year for a Disney vacation are:

    • second week of January – First week of February
    • End of August – first of October
    • Month of November prior to Christmas
  2. Book Early
With Disney – planning is everything! Not only do you need to book in advance for the best room rates and locations- you need to book well in advance for meals. Disney takes reservations up to 180 days prior to your stay. It is difficult to get into some of Disney’s premier restaurants – so book in plenty of time.

  3. Do Your Homework
Don’t wait until your standing in front of Cinderella’s castle before checking out a map of Magic Kingdom. The parks can be very overwhelming and it is a good idea to get a head start by studying the parks and the attractions. I also recommend purchasing a travel book on Disney. There are many popular titles, but these books can give you great insights into secrets of the park that will make your stay even more magical.

  4. Fast Pass is Your Friend
Fast Pass is the greatest Disney invention since the People Mover. Ironically, both work to move people efficiently through the park. Getting a fast pass allows you to return to a ride at a designated time and avoid the two-hour long lines.

  5. Pack Snacks
Packing snacks can save time and money. Throwing in some fruit and some crackers can prevent a fried fare overdose. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t partake in some of Disney’s wonderful food – especially in Epcot. Take advantage of the newly introduced Disney’s Dining Plan. For $39 per day, you get a sit down dinner, a snack and a counter service meal. We found this is a lot less expensive than traditional Disney dining.

  6. Take it Easy
There are many things to see and you can’t possibly see everything in one day. Get to the parks early, ride some favorite rides, return to the hotel in the afternoon for some R&R and then party away once the sun goes down. Let’s face it 12 hours of non-stop Disney can turn even a Disney Die-Hard into a little Grumpy.
